The story
The Shanghai Watch Company, founded in 1955, is one of China’s oldest and most renowned watchmakers, known for its rich heritage and commitment to precision craftsmanship. Originally established to produce mechanical watches for the domestic market, the company quickly gained recognition for its robust designs and reliability. Today, Shanghai Watch Company produces a range of timepieces appeal to a broad range of customers, from affordable but attractive pieces to higher end complications and adornments.
This simple Bauhaus style piece is 41mm and much of that is afforded to the dial. This creates additional space for a more elaborate design. The goal is to create an impression of Shanghai, showing the contrast between old and new, with the older streets and pearl tower in the back. The atmosphere could be in the Smokey industrial period of the 1920s or on a rainy day in the 2020s. The challenge is also to provide scale and contrast so that the city is recognisable and it feels as though you could walk into the dial.
