God of the Sea

The story

The Omega Seamaster watch has a rich history that dates back to its introduction in 1948. However, the 1960s marked a significant period of evolution and innovation for the Seamaster line.

During the 1960s, the Omega Seamaster gained prominence not only for its reliability and craftsmanship but also for its association with adventure and exploration. This decade saw the introduction of several key models that would solidify the Seamaster's reputation, such as the Seamaster 300 (a professional diving watch), as well as the expansion into the dress style watches (as is this one) to appeal to a broader audience).

The very name Omega, the 24th and final letter of the Greek alphabet, has connections to the spirit of the ancients, where mastery of the sea was only possible for Poseidon, the god of the sea. Poseidon governed all those who took to the waters, and his will could ensure a safe passage or confine a voyage to a watery end.

The dial design, showing age with a lovely patina, draws inspiration from the rich tapestry of Greek heritage, echoing the elegant simplicity of ancient pottery, but also the vibrancy of the watch's likely production date —the late 1960s and early 1970s—when the Golden Age comic book superheroes, with their black outlines and superhuman physics were gaining major cultural influence.

This piece draws a link between the heroes, gods, monsters and myths of ancient and modern times.
