The story

During the 1970s, as companies were exploring alternatives to mechanical watches, one technology in the race was the Tuning fork. These were battery powered watches that used the oscillations of a tuning fork to regulate the time. These technology was invented by the American watch company Bulova, who produced watches called Accutrons, and it was licenced to the Japanese watch company citizen who put Tuning Fork movements into two watches. The Cosmotron GX, and the HiSonic. This hisonic had a lovely dial with two tone reflective strips but had been damaged on the left hand side.

The design, a girl listening to music, picks up on the sound theme of tuning forks. The graffiti style design around her reflects both the experience of listening to music (with the vibrations and beats) but also the taboo of graffiti in Japan. It is extremely frowned upon and carries high costs and punishment if tagging the street. Graffitiing a wearable piece of art provides some small opportunity for rebellion.
