3 Koi Chronograph

The story

The Seiko 6139 watches, introduced in the late 1960s, are notable for being among the first automatic chronographs produced in the world. Launched in 1969, the 6139 series marked a significant milestone in watchmaking, combining innovative technology with stylish design. These timepieces were powered by the Seiko Caliber 6139 automatic movement, which featured a unique vertical clutch mechanism, allowing for precise timing and reliability.

The 6139 line was designed for both functionality and aesthetics, often featuring bold dials with distinctive color schemes and a tachymetric scale. The watches gained popularity among motorsport enthusiasts and pilots due to their robust construction and chronograph capabilities. Over the years, various models within the 6139 series were released, each showcasing different designs and features, but all maintaining the core attributes of the original movement.

Today, the Seiko 6139 watches are highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts, celebrated for their historical significance, technical innovation, and unique style. Their legacy continues to influence modern watch designs, solidifying their place in horological history.

This Seiko 6139 chronograph was initially purchased for parts, known as a 'donor' watch to vintage collectors, to be dismantled to provide parts for other watches in need. The dial was in terrible shape, stained and flaking, and the movement was not working. However two things saved this watch from becoming scrap; the case shape which is a stylish blend of vintage and modern and not one that commonly comes up for sale. The second is that the degradation of the blue dial was such that it resembled a shallow blue pond, almost naturally so. This watch was therefore repaired rather than donated, and the fish design used to provide a vibrant contrast in the pool; with the fish locations masking some of the more severely deteriorated areas of the dial.

The fish motif represents In Japan, the koi is a symbol of luck, prosperity, and good fortune, and also of perseverance in the face of adversity. A perfect metaphor for a watch that was on the brink of dismantling and now has a new life and may bring prosperity and fortune to future owners.
